5 Years Later

With the five year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaching, I’ve been thinking a lot about my recent trip to New Orleans with Vanderbilt’s Alternative Spring Break program.

During the week of Spring Break, I, along with eleven other Vanderbilt students, lived and worked in the areas of New Orleans hit hardest by Katrina. We stayed in a house in the St. Bernard parish that had been flooded by twelve feet of water, and as we walked up and down the street we could see huge slabs of concrete foundations where houses had been.

Earth day

Earth day

It's been forty years since the first Earth Day, and as we all know and have heard (either from Al Gore or Wall-e) we could use a bit of a clean-up. Well, our government agrees and next fall $452 million will go to (seemingly) randomly selected communities to update homes to be more energy-efficient.

Vice President Biden announced the "Retrofit Ramp-Up" plan earlier today, without dropping his notorious "f-bomb" a single time. The money will go to 25 communities for workers to go door-to-door offering the upgrades so entire neighborhoods can be improved.
