U of Kentucky
Feta fries and the great state of Georgia
Oh the gloriousness of college football. Growing up being a daddy's girl through and through, I became a tomboy at an early age. My dad had me dribbling around our basketball court at age 4. I was swinging a bat by age 5. I had kicked my first soccer ball at age 3. It was such an awesome way to grow up, I can't imagine my childhood without sports. And though I was a girl, my dad instilled in me a love of football. While he knew I couldn't play for the schools (all boys dangit), I learned to love it anyway. We would play in the backyard, my dad, brother and I, and just have a blast.
That is how I remember my life back then. Every night I had a different practice it seemed, and so did my brother. Between my brother and I both participating in basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, and track and then us branching out into our respective specialties (for me it was soccer, field hockey and cross country and for Patrick it was football and basketball), we never had any time to rest. And then we had our Saturdays. When we got older it got harder to commit to gametimes, but for my entire childhood we had season tickets to U of L football. Every saturday we would tailgate with the same people, eat the same amazingly delicious food (hello hungry man dip), and go rough house at the same patch of grass. It was awesome.
And so, much to my father's dismay, I got to Kentucky and was excited to enjoy that experience as a student. Not only was I going to get super cheap tickets, I was going to attend the school that I would be cheering for! How cool would that be? I remember when I was younger and saw all of the U of L students in their cool logo t-shirts with funny sayings, all tailgating together and having fun, I was so jealous. And now I got to go do the same, though it was strange cheering for UK at first, haha.
This year, my last year, I decided to continue my enjoyment of college football and attend an away football game. My whole 4 years at UK I had never gone to one, and this year it was going to be my year. Senior to-do list, my friends and I have called it, and now we are slowly checking things off (traipsing around the fountain at Rupp was number 1 hehe). And what better game to go to than UK vs. Georgia in beautiful Athens, GA? And it was gorgeous.
As we walked around their campus, I was in complete awe. Their antebellum style buildings and gorgeous landscaping were eye-catching, and the way it was laid out was perfection. Their football stadium is even in the middle of campus, how bizarre! But anyway, I realized then that I had made the right choice. What a cool thing I did, traveling the 6 and a half hours to get there. So we decided to complete the experience by doing UGA traditions. We took pics by the arch, we ate at the student center, took a picture with a metal sculpture "Uga" bulldog, and we ate FETA FRIES. Now, I love food. It is a sickness that no fear of a bikini can break, and I was most excited when a UGA student suggested we try them at this campus place called "The Grille". They definitely lived up to the hype. They were unassuming looking french fries with a side of what looked liek ranch dressing, but it was actually feta-ranch, and was the most delicious sauce ever! Kudos to you, UGA students for suggesting that awesome dish.
So I am glad I went, it was such a great experience and could never be replaced. As my best friend likes to say, "Work never ends but college does"...
