OSCARS!!
Hello Greeks! I know that y'all have been chomping at the bit, wanting to know how I did on my Oscar Predictions. I know that is what y'all are thinking about, I really do, so here I am to say what I thought about my predictions...
Best Picture
I said that The Hurt Locker would win because of the critical praise surrounding it, and it did! 1-1
Best Actor
I said Jeff Bridges would win, and he definitely did, but that one was not a real contest. 2-2
Best Actress
I said that Sandra Bullock would win, mostly because of everyone's high praise for her performance, and that Meryl gets a lot of accolades already, and she snagged that trophy! And I must say, gave the best Oscar Acceptance Speech that I have ever heard. Humble, gracious, and simple. She is what women should aspire to be! 3-3
Best Supporting Actor
I said that Christoph Waltz would win seeing as he was a shoe-in, and of course he did. 4-4
Best Supporting Actress
I (as well as everyone else) said that Mo'Nique would win, and as predicted, she did. 5-5
Best Director
I picked Katheryn Bigelow to win, mostly because of her amazing womanliness and innovative directing style. AND SHE WON! In a win that amde Oscar history as the first woman to win this particular award, I will definitely never forget that moment when Barbra Streisand said, "the time has come..." You go girl! 6-6
Best Animated Feature Film
I said Up would win, because it was a heartwarming, heartbreaking tale of a man and his promise to his wife. Simple, yet adorable and genuine, and it won!! WOOHOO 7-7
I went 7-7 on Oscar night for the things I voted on. I doubt my record would've been good in the other categories, as I only did the categories that I knew anything about (Cinematography is out of my league). I am quite proud of myself, and quite proud to be a woman. We made history that night, forever cementing the notion that being one gender or the other does not mean you should have a certain role in society. We are a new nation, one of emerging diversity and strength, and watching Kathryn Bigelow win gave me goosebumps. Seeing a wonderfully gracious and honest woman like Sandra Bullock finally win an Oscar was magical, and hearing her speak so endearingly of her fellow nominees and their strengths, and thanking her late mother was very powerful and moving. I definitely shed a tear hearing her be so open and thankful for her fortune. I wish I could be a person like her, and her grace is definitely something to be emulated.
I know that not everyone views the Oscars this way. Most view them as a waste of time, thinking that awards shows are boring and shallow. Maybe they are, but I know that the magic of movies will never be lost on me. I never fail to get caught up in the romanticism of a line of work started by such unforgettables like Ingrid Bergman, Carey Grant, Clark Cable, Katharine Hepburn, and Vivien Leigh. Maybe it is a silly thing to get worked up over (Lord knows I have cried over a sad commercial a time or two), but I find it nice to spend a few hours every once in a while and immerse myself in a story arc, cuddled up next to a bowl of popcorn and a blanket. So maybe watch a movie sometimes, they are there to move us to tears, to make us laugh, to make us examine the injustices, to think outside the box. I hope everyone will read this and watch their favorite movies, remembering why they loved them in the first place.
